dro carey - fact mix

gave this one a second spin this afternoon, and was just as blown away as i was when i first checked it a week or so back. it’s all here, techno, house, vocodered a cappellas, raekwon, old bleepy house, r&b, angry rap, juke, ustream rips, you get the idea.

annoyingly fact don’t let you embed their soundcloud players so you’ll have to rock on over to their site to stream it (clever eh). or you can click the artwork to download for keeps.

808s & Dark Grapes II

I’ve been listening to Main Attrakionz a fair bit of late. Fact Magazine and Pitchfork devotees may have come across them already but for those who haven’t, Main Attrakionz are Oakland based duo Squadda B & MondreM.A.N. For their latest release, entitled 808s & Black Grapes II, they are joined by a host of unfamiliar Bay Area producers and man who goes by the name of Clams Casino (perhaps you have heard of him…). As a result, the album holds a variety of intriguing production styles, in particular Bossalinis & Fooliyones Pt 2 (produced by AHYVE) with its soaring choral sample reminiscent of some of Paul White’s early stuff. You can pick the album up for free courtesy of the good folks at Miskha NYC. It’s well worth your time.

Main Attrakionz have been producing music for a few years now, and their earlier work is a lo-fi proposition compared to the more polished 808s & Black Grapes II (known thus due to the 808s series released back in 2009). Loud Pack is a good example of this, replete with distorted vocals and stuttering kick drum.

Ambassadeurs - Duke Red

It’s moments like this that make my heart melt.  Without getting too personal and mushy, I used to work at the college where Mark (Ambassadeurs) was studying a year or so ago, and thinking about him making music like this in the studios I used to care for, just makes me feel all warm inside.

Here Ambassadeurs has managed to make something bigger than the sum of all it’s parts.  For all the ‘heads’ out there, it’s brimming with influences from all corners of the global beat scene, without a hint of thievery, just glorious references abound. The arrangement is impecable, teasing with jukey triplets, skipping hats and awash with a glow that’s becoming familiar to those already accustomed to his work.

If this is anything to go by, it’s gonna be a very good year for Ambassadeurs. And it’s a FREE DOWLOAD for god’s sake!
